Your Questions About Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs

Susan asks…

Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs?

Where can I find a lot of counseling psychology graduate programs that ranks them?

admin answers:

Are you looking for a website that ranks schools/programs? You did not specify if that is what you want, though just google it, you should do fine, or try apa website

Mary asks…

Why won’t they offer counseling psychology graduate programs??!?

Okay well I want to be a counseling psychologist, and I was interested in going to either UT at A, or UH, but whenever I find their dpt. of psychology grad programs, I never see counseling psychology, only things like Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology, Cognition & Perception, Developmental Psychology, Individual Differences & Evolutionary Psychology, Social & Personality, Sensory Neuroscience,
and Industrial Organizational. It would be super hard to believe that 2 of the best and most accredited psychology colleges in Texas don’t offer any grad/doctoral programs on Counseling Psychology, so what gives? Am I just not looking in the right place??

admin answers:

Clinical Psych is often called ‘Clinical and Counseling Psych’, most are calling it ‘clinical’ to separate it from programs in counseling as the field of study.

‘Counseling’ as the major field is different than a psych specialty – if that’s what you’re looking for then you’re as likely to not find it in the Psych department but over in Ed or by itself in a program such as MFT.

Your Questions About Drug Addiction Recovery Programs

without comments

Lisa asks…

Drug Recovery. Do you manage it or do you have to be a recovery natzi?

20 years ago i went through rehab. Life went on. I finished college, got a job and a long the way discovered that I am just fine with social drinking. It doesn’t trigger me into anything destructive. I know I have a vulnerability when it comes to some drugs… so I take care around those types drugs and abstain from them.
I don’t personally see anything wrong with managing a propensity towards Addiction without complate abstanance from all substances if you’re happy and functional. I have maybe 1 or 2 beers twice a month with my fish tacos.
20 years later, is it really necessary to be a recovery natzi? Some people in the program can’t wrap their heads around it. But is that becasue they need to abstain from eveything and can’t wrap their heads around being able to have a drink without becoming dysfuctional about it?
Looking for you .02. I saw a shrink for something unrelated but she gave me lots of grif over the fact that I was in rehab 20 years ago (for a drug)that I now drink.
If I have not had any issues or problems socially drinking for 15 years, why should I stop now just because I had a problem 20 years ago? I just don’t get it – it doesn’t make sense to me. The point, is that it’s fun, and cultural.
I’m afraid the more I talk to recovering addicts, the less I relate.

admin answers:

If you can actually drink in moderation & have no problem then my hat is off to you!!

Most addicts know that booze is bad news for THEM!

When you say “program” are you talking about NA?
If so, then you gotta realize that it states in black & white print in their literature that is usually read at the beginning of each meeting “OUR FELLOWSHIP IS ONE OF COMPLETE ABSTINANCE FROM ALL DRUGS”
that may be a huge part of your disconnect with them, they probably believe you are in denial,…

Btw; if you are drinking-you aint really clean (alcohol is a drug)

Robert asks…

What is the most potent drug you have ever taken legally? How did it feel?

Anti-drug programs often talk about the dangers of illegal drugs. However, that does not mean that legal drugs are necessarily safe. In fact, some legal drugs carry a bigger risk of overdose and addiction that most illegal drugs.

The most potent drug I have ever taken legally is Vicodin, which is a mixture of Tylenol and hydrocodone. I was given it for wisdom teeth removal. The pain during recovery was horrific. I was literally crying and moaning sometimes because it was so bad. The Vicodin was a miracle drug for me in that it got rid of the pain. It did not get me “high,” but I didn’t care as long as the pain was gone. The only problem with this medicine was that it made my stomach feel bad, but I never actually vomited.

My father, however, told me to get off the meds because he thought that I was going to get addicted. I was nowhere near addiction, and the pain was horrible. He actually made things worse. I had to take another Vicodin despite what he thought, and when I couldn’t take Vicodin anymore, I had to take a lot of ibuprofen.
I have taken salvia 5X before (legal where I live), and it was a bit scary to be honest. However, I consider vicodin to be more potent as it is an opiate.

admin answers:

Potency does not necessarily have anything to do with how addictive a drug and comparing potency is only useful when comparing drugs of the same or similar classes. For example it is not realistic to compare to the potency of methamphetamine (which is a legal prescription in The United States) to morphine. Salvia, although it does bind to some opioid receptors, is not really classified as an opioid like hydrocodone so it is not realistic to compare the two by potency and in any case drugs that are extremely potent are typically no more or less addictive than drugs that are less potent as long as they have very similar effects.

For example hydrocodone is actually not a very potent opioid compared to many others yet it can still lead to a serious drug problem. However hydrocodone is not a full opioid agonist so its abuse liability tends to be a little bit less than full opioid agonists. Morphine (when taken orally it is equally as potent as hydrocodone), oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, methadone, Heroin, and fentanyl are the best known full opioid agonists and except from oral morphine all are more potent than hydrocodone. Hydromorphone and especially fentanyl are the most potent of those.

Will the stock market cause Rush to relapse on Oxycontin?

Opiates are a very hard Addiction to break, whether you have a broken personal life with multiple divorces, or a severe addiction to food. Rush wanted Obama’s plan to fail so bad, yet the damn market is proving him wrong. Will Rush be able to handle the pain?

Maria asks…

Alcoholic concerns…….. recovery?

I’m getting older, and have gone through detox 3 times in the past for with drawls — i’ve been drinking now for about a year- again- first started around 22……

i had my blood labs done recently and it showed my liver enzymes are up again. but no one has gotten specific with what those levels actually mean. Can someone help explain them??
the labs were ordered by my psychiatrist to look at my lithium levels….
i’m 28, turning 29 this summer-
i am no stranger to addiction- have been dealing with self-injury since i was 14, and struggled with anorexia/bulimia for about 10 years….. Both also horribly difficult and damaging-
I haven’t cut in about 2 years, with only one small slip up in between…. and i no longer starve, can digest food, and don’t crave feeling hunger pains.
i do know i drink too much- i am not in denial to myself- but i lie to others, so it doesn’t seem as bad as it is. making it even harder to seek help-
i Know i have a problem, i Know its taken over……
can anyone help me though —
i was suicidal — for , like 10+ years, and i feel like im finally ready to live- my meds are down, and effective….definitely swore i’d be dead by 27……… was the plan to be by 30- without a doubt.
i just want to understand my body- what can or is happening to it….. when it’ll be too late-
Im willing to listen to everything and anything- i go to weekly therapy 1 hr. indv. and 2 hr. of group- so its not like the help isnt there for mThank You but every little thing can help-

ThankYou everyone :)

admin answers:

First of all…you are to be commended for all that you have faced & dealt with thus far…you have allowed yourself to ‘realize’ & ‘accept’…
Now your words seem to express the loss of either support from those you wish it most from OR the loss of inspiration based upon your being isolated yet still attempting to take advantage of the counsel & group therapy available to you! YOU need to hear & acknowledge the genuine affirmation for your efforts thus far…I commend you sincerely I do!!!
Life is so totally full of obstacles & challenges via the journey we all must take…some of us choose the wrong or more difficult pathways versus others…YOU have met many challenges BUT thankfully have recognize your downfalls & weaknesses…NOW you must view each & every obstacle as a STEPPING_STONE towards the door of opportunity~
You obviously need the support & affirmation from others yet those are probably few & far between…NOW you must rely upon YOU & YOU alone…I hope & pray you realize your inner strengths as well as your determination & stamina to pursue…
I hope you will seek out others experiencing the same as you…why not try doing a search online here within the Yahoo groups as well as Google too…I can suggest that you check out the care2network where other care & share alike…many there have groups they have develop for others to join freely with them in support of one another…I hope you will check it out…also www.ivillage.com can offer support avenues for individuals facing your dilemma…PLEASE KNOW>>> “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”~

Your Questions About Addiction Recovery Center

without comments

Michael asks…

Are faith based christian Addiction Recovery centers legitamate?

Are the places legit and are the doctors real doctors.

admin answers:

Success rate of Teen Challenge is much higher than that of secular programs. As a person who grew up in church, you meet many men & women who you’d be surprised to know they once lived in a drug haze or were alcoholics. I don’t know of many people personally who live as if they were never in that condition after going through a secular program, maybe 3 men. It does depend on the program, not all are successful.

Ken asks…

Meth Addiction Recovery Specialists in Minnesota?

I am looking for a treatment center for my cousin, she is addicted to meth. I am curious if there are any recovery centers that specialize in treatment for this addiction.
I am also looking for one that is non-religious, or has a buddhist…club/group thing. I don’t know how they work exactly.

admin answers:

I don’t know any details, but the Hazelden centers have a very good reputation. Plus, there are four centers in Minn.
