Fuel gelling: Diesel vs. Jet A?
I’m asking in regards to using blended biofuels in diesel automobiles. One common issue is gelling in cold weather. Biodiesel and #2 diesel both have gelling problems when it’s very cold (it’s a little more severe with biodiesel).
My understanding is that jet fuel is closer to diesel than to gasoline, but I’d expect that Jet A can’t possibly have gelling problems like #2 diesel, because up where jets fly, it’s COLD.
Is Jet-A fairly impervious to gelling? Or do jet aircraft heat their fuel tanks? What’s the cost of Jet A as compared to #2 diesel?
Some jets require PRIST which will lower the freezing point of the water in the Jet fuel down to about minus 46 F. Some jets use a FUEL/OIL heat exchanger to warm the fuel and cool the engine oil at the same time. I’m not that familiar with deisel fuel but with JET A there is some dissolved water in the fuel which evolves at lower temps and can freeze into tiny ice crystals cause the “gelling” effect your describing.
