There are many different kinds of trout fishing bait out there. No matter the type of fishing you do, you likely have a favorite bait. Most people can recite their favorite baits and tell you the last time they caught fish with them. Regardless of your favorite trout fishing bait, here are some tried and true baits to get you started.

Small minnows make fro great trout fishing bait. These little fish move well in the water and provide an exciting treat for most fish. This is a great choice early in the season when fish seem extra lazy. Sometimes all it takes is a little minnow to get those big lurking fish to come out and eat.

A classic trout fishing bait is the worm. Night crawlers have been used to catch fish for generations. The reason for this is they work. Wiggling worms are irresistible to trout. Of course, worms don’t always work. They can be difficult to cast long distances, often falling off the hook. Using worms in fast moving water can seem impossible because it is too difficult to keep them from getting swept off the hook.

Another great choice of trout fishing bait are insect larva. Hellgrammites are a favorite of many trout fisherman. These are larva of the Dobsonfly. They make great trout fishing bait, because they have a primitive nervous system and continue to move around long after they are placed on the fishing hook.

A Little Fishing Strategy

Trout can be hard to catch. They are easily spooked and might be unwilling to nibble at your trout fishing bait. A good rule of thumb is to be quite. Don’t stomp around near the water and try to avoid wading too close to the hole you want to fish. If you do disturb the fish, then you might have to move on and return again later.

Another potential way to put the fish down, is to accidentally let them see you. This is a common mistake when fishing close to the shore or along a river. Do you know where your shadow is? If your shadow is moving over the water you plan to fish, then you probably wont’ catch a thing, no matter the trout fishing bait you use. Remember fish are looking the direction they expect to see food. For rivers and streams, that is usually upstream.

Did you hook a sucker instead of a tasty trout? Many fishermen keep these fish, cut them up, and use them as trout fishing bait. This can be great if you are running low on bait or if your trout fishing bait isn’t working.

There is plenty of information about fly fishing online. For additional information take a look at this site on trout fishing bait.

Fly Fishing Terms

Like in any other sports, fly fishing has its own set of
terms and jargon to talk about everything related to this
activity.

While it makes communicating with other fly fishing
enthusiasts easier, it can be confusing to the average
person, much less to those who are just starting out with
fly fishing.

To help out beginners, below are some fly fishing terms
which will let newbies get the hang of them and let them
understand what other more-experienced fly fishers are
talking about.

Back-cast – is the act of casting the line by first
throwing it backwards, letting it unfurl, then casting it
forward.

Buzzer – a term that refers to flies or any other insect
that flies over the water.

Cover – the act of casting a fly to an area with a good
number of fish.

Fly – an artificial lure which attracts fish by imitating a
natural lure or by getting its attention with the lure’s
bright colors.

Fly Line – the line usually made of synthetic material to
which the hook is attached.

Fly Reel – the object which holds the line. It comes in
several types depending on several factors which include
the materials used and function.

Fly Rod – the rod used specifically for fly fishing. It is
usually made of bamboo, fiberglass and graphite.

Jig – a small and metal-headed artificial lure which
usually has feathers on it.

What is listed above is only the most common terms used in
fly fishing. However, they are enough to let beginners get
by in conversations about the activity.

There are others more out there that beginners can pick up
as one gains experience in this angling method.
