jiu jitsu headgear
how common to lose first mma fight?

How common is it for people to lose their first fight in a martial art such as tae kwon do, boxing, muay thai, Brazillian jiu jitsu. If you are starting off in a D-class match without headgear.

And I know it ‘all depends on the person’ but by your experiences.
Experiences or comments welcomed

Jiu Jitsu Belt Test

jiu jitsu belt test
Should I quit Jiu Jitsu?

So I’ve been taking mixed martial arts and jiu jitsu for about five years. Part of me really wants to stop because I just got my junior black belt last night. The owner and like master of the gym can be really mean when your testing, and my feelings were a little hurt at some of the things he said when I was taking the test. I mean I love the sport and I’m pretty good at it but I’ll have to move out of the kids class soon and I’m not sure if I want to go into the adult class (they have no teen class…) And I won’t have my best friend in that class for a while…. So I’m really torn because part of me wants to move on and another part of me wants to keep training. Not that it will lead me any where because I don’t do competitions. What do you all think?

Oh and the owner is like a big o’l money hog and the classes are expensive, and my mom would have to sign me up for like another year instead of month by month.

Uh oh sounds again like a McDojo. Either find another school that teaches Jiu Jitsu/Jujitsu or start training in another combat sport or martial art. And don’t worry about your best friend…as long as you stay in touch with them everything will be fine.

Jiu Jitsu Clip Art

Difference between Brazilian and American Jiu Jitsu?

I saw a clip from youtube about Sensei John Giotis doing American Jiujitsu. His style is not much about ground grapping but I believe a combination of Judo, Hapkido and Jiu Jitsu. Can anyone tell the difference between the two versions of Jiu Jitsu based on their experience of these 2 arts?

Well, from what I have seen and heard “American Jiu-Jitsu” is Jake Shields’ version of BJJ. Shields is the Strikeforce Middleweight champion, and he says that his “AJJ” is BJJ combined with takedowns and slams from wrestling.

However, you mention a different man. You also say that “his style is not much about ground Grappling…” BJJ focuses on ground fighting and grappling, while I suppose Giotis’s version does not.

Most of the time, whenever some American tries to make their own spin off of a martial art(American Jiu-Jitsu, American Karate, etc) it is usually a McDojo art.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? The Concept Behind the Martial Art.
